  3. Racom, Bull connect in contactless smart card alliance

  9.  Bull CP8, a

  11. division of Groupe Bull, and Raycom Systems announced an alliance to
  12.  
  13. develop, manufacture and market contactless smart card transaction
  14.  
  15. systems.
  16.  
  17.   The agreement positions both companies to increase sales in the
  18.  
  19. smart card market that is already growing at APR and expected to be over
  20.  
  21. $1 billion by 1996.
  22.  
  23.   Officials with both companies said the deal also addresses a growing
  24.  
  25. need to provide a single, multifunction contactless smart card capable of
  26.  
  27. supporting both industry standards and multiple applications currently
  28.  
  29. being serviced by incompatible and noninteroperable technologies -
  30.  
  31. including magnetic stripe, contacted smart cards, tokens and RF
  32.  
  33. indentification systems.
  34.  
  35.   The pact enables Bull CP8 to market Racom products under its own name
  36.  
  37. through its international sales network to independent OEM's integrators
  38.  
  39. and end-users.
  40.  
  41.   In addition, Bull CP8 and its European manufacturing partners will
  42.  
  43. assemble and personalize cards using Racom's contactless technology. The
  44.  
  45. companies also will join forces to develop ISO standard compliant cards
  46.  
  47. and integrate Racom's contactless reader technology into Bull CP8 contact
  48.  
  49. card readers.
  50.  
  51.   In addition, the agreement combines Bull CP8's expertise in financial
  52.  
  53. transaction card operating systems, high volume card manufacturing and
  54.  
  55. cryptography with Raycom's contactless card microprocessor technology.
  56.  
  57.   The pact should offer multiapplication, multifunction contactless card
  58.  
  59. systems supporting both existing ISO compliant telephone, prepaid, credit
  60.  
  61. and debit contact card markets as well as emerging contactless system
  62.  
  63. applications found in automatic fare collection, toll collection, customer
  64.  
  65. loyality, electronic purse, leisure and automated vending markets.
  66.  
  67.   Raycom Systems designs, manufactures and markets contactless radio
  68.  
  69. frequency transaction precessing subsystems for people and mobile
  70.  
  71. equipment.
  72.  
  73.   Racom's products are based on integration of ferroelectric memory
  74.  
  75. technology and wireless, batteryless communications technology allowing
  76.  
  77. hands-free contactless operation at speeds undetectable by human
  78.  
  79. perception.

  89.   Wow, just think about the -convenience- this provides. you no longer
  90.  
  91. need to fumble through your purse or sort through your pocket for your
  92.  
  93. Visa or ATM card. Just tell the cashier to point the scanner and - presto
  94.  
  95. - you've paid for your groceries! Or, better yet, your son heads to the
  96.  
  97. theater to see 'The Lion King', or so he says! Instead he wants to see the
  98.  
  99. current 'R' rated flick, but when he tries to purchase the ticket, the
  100.  
  101. machine says: "Minor - Not Allowed".
  102.  
  103.   But consider also that this is 'contactless'. The Federalies scan
  104.  
  105. everyone driving down the street and know whether you have paid your
  106.  
  107. vehicle registration, water bill, or have an income level comparable to
  108.  
  109. the vehicle you are driving.
  110.  
  111.   They know where you live, if your are married, if you have outstanding
  112.  
  113. parking tickets, ad nauseum; ALL WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEGE OF BEING
  114.  
  115. INTERROGATED. Remember, it's CONTACTLESS.

  117.   With a slight amount of effort, the Feds can modify their NCIC database
  118.  
  119. to track each of these unknown -transactions- to track your every
  120.  
  121. movement. Automatic readers of this sort are available from Hughs which
  122.  
  123. are in the form of an arch across a road and can track multiple subjects
  124.  
  125. even if they change lanes.

  127.   For those who do not know who Groupe Bull or Racom are:
  128.  
  129.   Groupe Bull: Headquarted in Paris, France.
  130.  
  131. Has partnerships with IBM, NEC, Zenith Data Systems to name a few. They
  132.  
  133. build and/or market computers from the Z-Note laptop size to their DPS9000
  134.  
  135. series (Sweden has a 9000/92T which processes every financial transaction
  136.  
  137. their government does from payroll to pensions.) Bull purchased Honeywell
  138.  
  139. Information Systems during the 1980's.
  140.  
  141.   Racom: Has been a leader in data communications in various forms since
  142.  
  143. the early days of electronic computing.
